December 11 (2010), Pacific Centre for Advanced Materials and Microstructures at UBC

The 2010 PCAMM meeting will be held on Saturday, December 11 at UBC. The day's schedule begins at 9:30 and ends at 5:00. For details on the speakers and talks, please go to the website.

May 3 (2010), Nanofabrication and Characterization Training Workshop

As part of the graduate student training programs, CAMTEC is offering the “Nanofabrication and Characterization Training Workshop” in conjunction with UVic NanoFab and Advanced Microscopy Facility. This workshop covers scanning electron microscopy on the Hitachi S-4800 SEM (AMF), focused ion beam fabrication on the Hitachi FB-2100 (AMF), and electron beam lithography with the RAITH50 (UVic NanoFab). The workshop is fully funded by CAMTEC, and starts May 3rd, 2010.

March 26 (2010), Reuven Gordon named as the Canada Research Chair in Nanoplasmonics

Dr. Reuven Gordon (ECE) was named as the Canada Research Chair in Nanoplasmonics. Reuven Gordon’s research will help in the creation of sensors for the early detection of cancers, new tools to study viral infection and more efficient and cost-effective solar devices.

Congratulations !

March 17 (2010), CAMTEC Research Stipends

Mr. Jordan Cramen (Chemistry) and Mr. Weicong Li (ECE) have been awarded with CAMTEC Collaborative Research Stipends. Dr. Capucine Burrowes (Physics & Astronomy) has been awarded with CAMTEC Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Congratulations !

Feb. 19 (2010), CAMTEC Annual Retreat
The Annual CAMTEC Retreat was held February, 19, 2010 in the Engineering/Computer Science Building, room 660. There were 32 attendees from 4 departments. Of the attendees, 14 were faculty and 18 were graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. The retreat provided an opportunity to stimulate interdisciplinary research collaboration among CAMTEC members and to identify the future development direction of the Centre.

This year CAMTEC hosted "The Student Oral Presentation Competition" as part of the annual CAMTEC retreat. 9 graduate students participated in the competition and gave high profile presentations. The panel of judges awarded two cash prizes to Mr. Shawn Penson (Electrical & Computer Engineering) and Mr. Haitian Xu (Physics & Astronomy).

Congratulations !

Sept. 17 (2009), New nanofabrication facility to support nanotechnology research at UVic

The UVic Nanofabrication Facility (NanoFab), the only facility of this kind on Vancouver Island, began operation in September, 2009. The NanoFab, located in the new clean room in the Elliott building at the Department of Physics & Astronomy, has been completed with support from WED (Western Economic Diversification) and the University of Victoria. The UVic NanoFab is an open access user facility equipped with an Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) system in class 100 and 1000 clean rooms.

The UVic NanoFab provides the capability of designing, fabricating and characterizing nano-scale structures with feature sizes as small as 50 nm. The NanoFab will provide the researchers on campus with a broad range of nanofabrication capabilities to support electronics, optical, molecular, magnetics and MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) projects. The NanoFab will also create new opportunities in the research of nanoscale structures in local industries by allowing R&D researchers to design and process novel materials to achieve critical dynamic enhancements of performance and functionality in a wide variety of applications.
